Online care

Online care

# Can care start online?

An online visit still needs an assessment, a person responsible for the plan and a way to ask more questions.

Term in plain words

## Telehealth

Telehealth is care at a distance: a video or phone conversation, or information exchanged online.

## Check these points

- **Ask how the first assessment works**
Massachusetts board policy allows care to start online without an earlier visit in person unless another law requires one, as of September 30, 2026.

Ask whether you speak with the person caring for you or fill in answers for them to read later.

- **Ask who can follow up**
National medical-board guidance, as of September 26, 2026, says patients must have a way to bring further questions to their treating professional after the assessment.

Before agreeing, get a name and a way to make contact. Ask who answers, how soon to expect a reply and what to do while waiting.

- **Ask how a visit in person would be arranged**
State board policy sets the same care standard for remote and in-person doctor visits, as of September 30, 2026.

Ask who arranges any examination or test that cannot be completed remotely.

## Notes that explain the checks

### A visit may include a form

Massachusetts law includes online interviews that adapt to your answers within telehealth, as of September 30, 2026.

Such a form changes its next question based on your reply. Ask how the person treating you checks your health before choosing a medicine.

As of September 26, 2026, national medical-board guidance says choosing a shot from a website’s menu is not enough for a prescription. The person treating you must first assess your health and the problem you want help with.

This national guidance is advice for state medical boards, the bodies that license doctors. Each state sets the rules it enforces.

### Keep the location clear

The Massachusetts medical board treats the patient’s location as the place of care, as of September 30, 2026.

Give your actual location during the visit, even if you live in Boston and happen to be travelling.
